La diversité des thèmes abordés par les auteurs, témoigne de la popularité de la déesse Isis, mais aussi de l’immense champ d’étude qu’elle offre encore.
S’appuyant notamment sur ses découvertes récentes, Pierre Tallet s’interroge sur la fonction des conjurateurs de Serqet et des repousseurs de scorpions, auxiliaires de la déesse Isis, qui accompagnaient les expéditions égyptiennes vers le Sinaï au début du règne d’Amenemhat III.
Cette déesse « experte en guérison des piqûres et morsures venimeuses » se trouve bien évidemment invoquée dans les textes magiques ; Pascal Vernus souligne tout le travail littéraire que suscite la figure d’Isis dans certains de ces textes.
Le culte d’Isis était très largement répandu dans toute l’Egypte ; Françoise Dunand nous en propose une synthèse aux époques ptolémaïque et romaine.
Trois exemples spécifiques font l’objet d’une étude détaillée : Isis d’Assouan par Gihane Zaki, Isis de Deir Chelouit par Christiane Zivie-Coche et Isis de Behbeit par Christine Favard-Meeks ; tous trois, replacés dans leur contexte politique ou théologique local, prennent ici une dimension nouvelle.
Isis dépassa aussi largement les frontières de l’Egypte et Laurent Bricault analyse ici l’introduction de son culte à Rome.
La déesse suscite aussi les commentaires des premiers chrétiens ; Gérard Roquet nous présente Eusèbe de Césarée aux prises avec l’étymographie des noms d’Isis et d’Osiris.
Annie Forgeau évoque l’aspect universaliste de la figure d’Isis, à travers les siècles et les civilisations.
Enfin, Philippe Collombert clôt le volume par un clin d’œil...
